@GAP2017

Update to the latest WinRAR or 7-Zip to decompress the rar file.

@meridian I don't think his problem is a rar file. This is an openload issue. He is talking about clicknupload and a mkv file.

My P4 3.4 MHz WinXP 32bit using VLC plays HEVC x265 8bit.

@Raada , Some XP boxes want even play above 480p x264 . 720p x264 will not play very well it just depends on what kind of processor you have.

There are much better open source players for Hevc than VLC like mpv or smplayer runs circles around vlc because it uses less process than vlc does. Even the PC i'm on now that came with Windows 8.1 does not play 1080p 10 bit x265 very well because of it's processor .

It plays all x264 , 720p x265 8 and 10 bit and 1080p 8 bit x265 like they post here and it plays x265 better when i'm in Linux than does when i'm on Windows.

You can buy a cheap TV box nowadays and it will play 4k x265 full blu-ray with no problem were with computers you would need at lest a GTX 1080 to play 4k x265 smoothly .

The bigger and newer your hardware is the better Hevc will play but there is no future in it .its only found on warez sites and in blu-ray disc ,Tech have embraced av1 witch is the format of the future .

@Katmando
I was trying to give Gap2017 a benchmark for successful HEVC playing. Running XP has nothing to do with it. The CPU/GPU has everything to do with it. My 10 year old box with ATI graphics works. btw, I've tried MPV and prefer VLC. I don't like TV / gaming boxes because of the lack of customization and updatability.

Anyone who still uses XP witch Microsoft stop updating in 2014 is not worried about updatability. i advise not to even use Windows XP anymore. To use Windows 8.1 ,Windows 10 ,linux ,or Mac.

Windows have lots of players for Hevc besides VLC with VLC lack of features and bugs i never recommend using that player.

For years VLC use to be the top player on Linux tell they came out with MPV

https://www.slant.co/topics/5260/~media-players-for-linux

If you don't like MPV you can try a front end for MPV like SMplayer witch runs on MPV but you gives tons of features that VLC don't even have.

As far as TV Boxes that what the masses or using now days there just Android OS .

I am still using Windows 7 x64, which is imminently about to lose Microsoft support and Windows Updates. In spite of that I will use Windows 7 x64 as long as I possibly can, on machines I can install it on, I despise the idea of updating to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. But take your pick.

I use Kodi for my media library, and MPC-BE for watching or testing any video outside of Kodi. They both play HEVC H.265 and any other video type you can possibly throw at them, TS transport stream, mp4, mkv, and avi among the rest. MPC-BE is very light and small and has a lot of features for it's size. The thing I like about Kodi is it will create a library for videos you want to keep, and download fan art to go with them, as well as movie or TV series and episode descriptions. It sort of gives it a Netflix appearance (but better), and it's stored locally instead of streaming, and the information is much more detailed in many cases, depending on the users and volunteers who keep up the tv and movie databases it scrapes it's art and written information from.

If you think you need codecs I advise staying away from large codec packs, the fewer the better. The only codecs I will use are Shark 007 codecs, shark007. net/ they are safe and meant to work with Windows security and UAC permissions, each Windows user account's codec settings are enforced, and the administrator's settings inherit administrator control. They will let you listen to TrueHD Atmos and DTSx MASTER audio using an HDMI out from most new(er) GPUs, to an HDMI AV/Receiver. I got a really nice one at Amazon for less than $250 that came with the receiver and a 5.1 speaker setup a couple years ago. It works well for an apartment setup where you can't make unlimited dB of theater sound and keep your residence, I can barely turn it up to the lowest volumes and be above the limit my neighbors will tolerate. Homeowners probably have the option of getting the loudest speakers with the most wattage and amperage boosting their A/V setup, but keep in mind optical cables carry a max output of 24 bit 96 kHz, if you think you will listen to blu rays or 24 bit music at 24 bit 192 kHz, HDMI is the only output in the digital realm I know of now that can move that much data. Most good A/V receivers will have on board DACs: digital to audio converters, so your audio will have that analog sound you remember from old vinyl and FM stereo broadcasts back in the day, not the digital compressed am transistor radio sound you get from mp3s, mp4s, AAC, and my iPOD clipped all the way down to a 16 bit data rate, which for some reason CDs sadly were. DVDs can play 24 bit audio, and they were sold as DVD audio for a while, but for whatever reason that format didn't take off for audiophiles to justify the expense of studios creating them much anymore, if at all.

@Divine-Cannibal,

Hi, I still run Win7 on my media computer. I love how easy and intuitive Media Center works, especially with my HD Homerun. Before MS stopped giving away free Win10 licenses, I dropped in a spare hard drive and installed the update, authenticated it, then pulled it out for future use. Win 10 with Classic Shell (yes, it still works) and some tweaking looks like Win7 and there are help tips for securing your privacy. I tried Kodi with it but never found the same comfort level as with MC. I do hope to find a good and easy FTA TV front end before Win7 dies.
