1280x536 IS 720p.

You take the 16:9 box that encloses the actual movie and the height (in pixels) is the "p" number.
The rationale is that most screens monitors are 16:9 so if your screen is 720 pixels high (and thus 1280 wide) it will be able to show it at full resolution.

Most cinema films are wider than 16:9 (= 1.78:1) so they will have black bars on a 16:9 screen, and when encoded will be less than 720 high.
This film is 1280:536 = 2.38:1

It would have been simpler to just cite the width instead of height, but that's the convention.

What tom said and you can either have black bars or a stretched picture if it is encoded up to1280x720, i would prefer the 1280x536.

While i would never download 1280x536 movies because its not the best viewing experience, they make them because ppl hate black bars in their movies and are popular.
It may not be the original 720p described when the standards first came out, but has evolved into dozens of formats and sizes since.
Even apple now make this size available to download and call it 720p
Personally i carnnot stand the ratio but each to their own.

The "P" in 720P stands for "Progressive" ...not pixels!

1280x536, 1280x588, 1280x688 etc. In these cases, even though you don't have 720 vertical lines, these resolutions are still considered to be 720P (Progressive) or 720I (Interlaced. The numbers give you vertical resolutions. Horizontal resolution depends on a given aspect ratio.

@TheMovieMan
Yes and no
The "p" stands for Progressive scan.
The "720" as described by the original international standards can only be 720 vertical lines which i believe is what wot-4 is referring to.
But times change and standards evolve and mature as i previously said.
