The problem is with the host -- Clicknupload -- as the file has been cut. It's slightly smaller than it's supposed to be. It states the file is 1.7GB but the file is 1.6GB. It won't play regardless as it's missing data

I had the same problem with the new Pet Sematary movie. Had to download it off a different site.

That' right. It seems the problem is the file not being uploaded completely to ClicknUpload. This has happened before here.

Anyway, the best and most powerful media player on earth is K-Lite Codec Pack (Full or Mega) (CodecGuide.com/download_kl.htm). The other great one is mpv (which is based on MPlayer and mplayer2) (mpv.io). KLCP (Full or Mega)and mpv can play ANY media file out of the box without the need to configure or download any extra codec. KLCP is Windows-only while mpv is cross platform. Having both of them on a system is a wise thing to do.

PotPlayer (PotPlayer.Daum.net) and SMPlayer are good.
VLC Media Player (videolan.org/vlc/index.html) was once the Swiss army knife of video players but it's not recommended anymore due to its inability to play some codecs and inferiority as compared with KLCP and mpv.

What common codec can't VLC play?

In my opinion:

From a security perspective, verifiable open source projects, as I mentioned above, should always be preferred and are the safest options. K-Lite Codec Pack is a freeware project so you cannot be sure of its security.

Looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-Lite_Codec_Pack#Supported_file_formats

I can't see any common codec or format that VLC or smplayer (a frontend for mplayer, mpv) can't play.

And remember, x264 & x265 encoders, which everyone uses, were created by VideoLAN

VLC has problem playing AV1 and some lesser-used audio codecs. It's clearly inferior compared to KLCP and mpv and hence not recommended by many encoding groups anymore.

I have no problem playing AV1 with a non-windows VLC 3.0.18.Vetinari

vlc does their own AV1 decoder https://www.videolan.org/projects/dav1d.html and has been incorporated since before VLC 3.0.5 Vetinari
