I guess the problem with "True Detective" is that the first season is so revered. A lot of people hated the second one just because they tried something different. They'd literally say stuff like "I would've liked it if it wasn't called "True Detective"". And so I felt the third season, as good as it was, was kind of a cop out in how much it followed the template of the first one, presumably in order to appease them.

So whoever takes a crack at it next will still have to deal with a lot of expectations (and annoying comparisons). The HBO guy even says something like "We won't move forward with it if we don't have a good story". Call me gullible, but I'm inclined to believe him in this case.

After all, I understand other HBO shows like "The Night Of", "Watchmen" and "The Outsider" were all pretty popular, and despite there being talks, no follow-ups to them will materialize in the foreseeable future, if ever.

During my quick research on Munchkins (and their height), I tried to find out just how old Dorothy is supposed to be in the book, but to no avail. Judy Garland was 16 when she starred in the 1939 movie, and that gave me the idea that the Munchkins might as well be the size of a regular human. I now see that was a rather wrong way of thinking and the character is most likely a few years younger.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my ideas for a sci-fi adaptation, I'll definitely take them under consideration.
I've decided to face my fears and watch the 1939 movie soon, along with the 1985 unofficial sequel titled "Return to Oz", which is said to be much darker in tone and contain even more nightmarish imagery. I think it will be helpful if I am to make any progress with my own version.
It's very fortunate that the book is in public domain; I can do what I want with the story without having to worry about lawsuits.

I used to think that only edgy kids spell "The VVitch" with the two Vs, but IMDb also has it like that, so it's probably just me being silly again.
IMOv"The Lighthouse" confirmed Robert Eggers is a filmmaker to watch, so I'm pretty hyped for "The Northman". That's some impressive cast there, too.

I don't recall advocating for "singing/dancing kids playing as adults", but maybe I just didn't make myself clear enough, wouldn't be the first time.
Never heard of "Bugsy Malone", but it looks... well, interesting. We probably own its existence to all the coke studio executives snorted in the 70s, but that's OK, as a lot of great movies from that period must have been greenlighted thanks to all that excess.

Oof, judging by your description, "Clarice" might be even worse than I imagined. This show should have been more "True Detective than "NCIS" or whatever, if you ask me. And I too find it annoying when they bash you over the head with wokeness. I'd advise a more subtle approach.

Thanks for explaining the reasoning behind the "actors" thing, I guess it makes sense to just have one term. Yet, me being European, I have been taught it's more "progressive" to use "feminized" job titles when referring to a woman, and my resistance likely stems from that.
This might be of some interest: https://frenchly.us/academie-francaise-approves-feminization-of-job-titles/.

So if they decide to go with just "Best Actor", does that mean they will only be handing out a single award instead of two? :(

I've honestly been wondering when will the PC hardliners take on the award categories, accusing them of being sexist, not inclusive enough, etc. I can only think of one reason why this has not happened yet: there's too much money involved, and as you have pointed out, once you start poking holes in the system, it all falls apart like a house of cards.

Honestly, I don't pay that much attention to the awards. We know it's basically just the industry patting themselves on the back and occasionally letting someone new join the club. Yet I do always try to watch as many of the Oscar-nominated films as I can, because, well, "it's the Oscars, man".

Incidentally, I've been recently professionally involved in organizing a certain awards ceremony, and I've seen firsthand how the sausage is made. It's kinda sad.

There is already no shortage of movies with women in lead roles. It's taking a bit longer with the big-budget fare, probably because top-level executives are a cowardly and superstitious lot (not to mention that they often seem to be completely out of touch with reality), but it's happening. You can only ignore half of your audience for so long.

I don't think Elon ever sits and mopes around, pondering his failures. Those kind of people rarely get anything done. I bet he doesn't even consider them "failures", just temporary setbacks and obstacles on the way to his ultimate goal, which he will sooner or later achieve anyway.

I don't usually care much for talking heads or documentaries, unless I'm really interested in the topic. Last year I watched two several hours-long documentaries made by the same team: "Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy" and "Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th". That was some seriously great stuff. I wish they'd tackle the "Halloween" series next.

I have been aware of the Nic Cage series, but since you recommend, then I will check it out. Another guy who I would think would be a good host for this is Joe Pesci, but even Scorsese had trouble getting him out of retirement for "The Irishman".

Is it just me or does Nic's hairline seem to be lower than usual? Well, with all the lockdowns and filming being shut down, it was a good time as ever to get a transplant.

Regardless of their origins, I think profanities have their uses, but if a person keeps dropping them in a conversation for no reason whatsoever, then that gets tedious pretty fast, at least for me.

Apropos of nothing, I finally watched "Psycho Goreman" last night and I heartily recommend it. It's bloody hilarious.

Until fucking next time.

> ..does that mean they will only be handing out a single award instead of two?

An option for any awards group is to have just one award for Best Actor, which is inclusive as it can get for such an award, as any human can get it, at least in a perfect world.

As to be inclusive by having zillions of awards, that's another thing involving a questionable tactic, as it only attempts to simulate a perfect word. Taken to the extreme, then everyone is the best actor, and we all get an award, as we are all special, just like everyone else. :)

Yes, Nic's hairline is lower. Perhaps he's getting younger, or his face is getting smaller? :)

I don't recognize so-called "profanities" as anything different than any other words, as the context and intent is all that matters to me. Also, most people use very offensive speech no matter what words they use or not. For example, I find all foreign languages offensive, as I don't like jibber jabber. :)

I agree that it can be a pain when folks use words for no reason whatsoever, as with "apropos of nothing". :)

> ..because top-level executives are a cowardly and superstitious lot (not to mention that they often seem to be completely out of touch with reality

I don't know about that "superstitious" claim, but they are not cowardly or completely out of touch with reality. For the most part, it's women who have been cowardly, by letting ruthless men and dykes walk all over them. If most women were truly strong, there would likely be no place for a MeToo movement.

> You can only ignore half of your audience for so long.

I doubt "they" simply ignore that market much, yet it's clear to me that things have not been fair for many talented women in an industry that has all too often required them to suck the boss man's dick. But who knows, perhaps they liked sucking the boss man's dick, but then played the victim after they got screwed over? Regardless, those men in power can pretty much keep on ignoring whomever they want. And if push comes to mighty shove, they can often just close down shop, move on, or retire, empowered by their Ayn Rand dogma or whatever.

That said, I don't care much about any of the SJW poison that trickles into my entertainment, and I don't need to be woke or whatever. I just care to be entertained by whatever I happen to enjoy. For example, I've enjoyed Star Trek Discovery, but not because it features queers and freaks, but simply because I think it's good Sci-Fi.
