Strike Back has done most filming in South Africa, as well as Hungary, Jordan, and Thailand. Nothing has been done in the USA.

The main thing that makes Strike Back a so-called "British/American series" is those were the initial markets it was sold to, although much of the world can watch it now as well, including Asia.

In this case the distributors are just cogs in a wheel that Sony spins, as they control the licenses for distribution.

Also, it's just not HBO US, also HBO Asia and more.

More importantly that you failed to mention is that Cinemax also distributes it and is a co-producer, yet still under the arm of Sony.

I'm not disputing your words, they just don't mean much. Just because it was first distributed in the USA and UK means little. For example, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) is going to first be distributed in Australia, France, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, and Sweden. But that means nothing; it's still an American movie, owned by Disney (USA).

That all said, I'll help you out here.. It doesn't matter if Sony owns it, as with marketing they can pretty much call it whatever they want. Personally though, I would call it Japanese. For example, if I bought a Toyota that was "made" in Georgia USA, I would still call it a Japanese car, as I think most folks would.
