Hello All You Love Peeps! I asked and you offered MKVToolNix which I know love! Now I wish to ask, does anyone out there know of a free video converter that is faster than Handbrake?

Handbrake does what it says but it's so slow even in "fast" mode.

Any suggestions please.

Stay safe and keep RapidMoviez... ing :)

I use VidCoder which is based on Handbrake, but has more features. I doubt it is any faster. For some conversions I use Xillsoft ultimate. Both programs nearly peg out my CPU, Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake. MKVToolNix is muxing, not converting which is why it is so much faster. I think the only way to speed things up would be to get a faster CPU.

I too like VidCoder over Handbrake, as the GUI is better for me. And I expect you are right, that VidCoder isn't any faster than Handbrake. Also note, VidCoder is just for Windows, whereas Handbrake also works on macOS and Linux.

@openingcrewBeyond
To find something that might be faster, I would dig around the videohelp site.

Personally, I use Avidemux, although I've read it's slower that Handbrake, yet some dev at Avidemux said otherwise. I've found that "speed" involves many things, such as if you are also encoding the audio, what methods and program settings you use, and what containers you have and choose, and your system specs.

For example, with Avidemux, for coding from AVC to HEVC and/or from 6ch to AAC stereo, if the original file is mp4, then I first mux it to mkv with MKVToolNix. After that, I then drop that new mkv file in Avidemux, choose my encoding settings, and save it as mp4. Then if I need to add a subtitle, I'll drop that new mp4 into MKVToolNix, add the sub, and mux, done. Note that Avidemux can't mux subtitle files, so I use MKVToolNix for that. Why do all that? I've found that all works best with no errors. Also, when I encode with Avidemux, I usually give it a "low" encoding priority, which takes longer to encode, but I can still use my PC for other stuff, and I'm in no hurry. More so, I want to avoid any errors, and I only encode about 1 video per week. If I did more, I'd buy a much faster system. Also note, with Avidemux you can change the encoding priority any time during the encode process, and even pause it as need be. Also I've noticed that Avidemux is much faster if I encode a video no more than half the original size. For that, I use the "Video Size (Two Pass)" encoding mode.

Also, the one time I had to encode many video files, I used a spare, dedicated PC for that, and set the Avidemux encoding priority to "High".

So, Avidemux and MKVToolNix does most all I need, and MeGUI, gMKVExtractGUI, and GoldWave cover the rest as need be.

Also note, if you are willing to pay for more speed, buying a newer PC or video card is obvious, but there are also cloud services that encode video to whatever you want, for a fee. So, you might want to explore your options being spending too much.

I have a trial PremiumKey account and I downloaded some TV episodes BUT when I tried to d/l after about 4 eps, it automatically takes me to streaming, which I DO NOT want. This is the very reason why I have not bought a PremiumKey account before as I was told this happens. I ONLY want to d/l.!!! Why is this happening or why???

Ubuntu 18.04 is my main machine. I have a Windows 7 & 8 machines I run offline networked to the Linux. Linux is great for a lot of things, but I have yet to find replacements for some important programs. Windows is more reliable at really big copy jobs. I use Dolphin as a file manager for Linux. It doesn't even warn you if there isn't enough disk space on the destination. Just fills it to the last meg & stops. It would choke if you tried to run off a backup for a really large disk. For large HEVC conversion jobs I split the seasons, & half on 7 & half on 8. The other program I mentioned, Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate is not free but worth the money. (about $40) Windows & Mac only. Extremely accurate editing, within a couple frames. Lots of other features I have not found on any other programs.

Tried some other Linux file managers. Didn't find any that were much different than Dolphin. Took Microsoft a long time to get one right. XP still had some of the same miserable traits as DOS. I skipped Vista. 7 was a big leap forward & 8 added some refinements. Never installing spyware 10, hence the switch to Ubuntu. Don't know what changing browsers would do. Using Firefox mainly plus Chrome for just a few sites that seem to work better in it.

I tried Xilisoft Video Converter a few years ago, but I didn't like it. It has a low rating on videohelp, but there's only 5 votes, so IDK.. Being that you say it's worth buying, I'll at least consider if need be, but I'm happy with what I already mentioned for my basic needs on Windows 10 and Zorin OS.

As for large copy jobs in Linux, there is dedicated software for that, such as with CopyMastro.

Overall, I think Windows 10 does the most, involving the widest choice of the best, free software I know of and use regularly. I liked Windows 7 better, but being that it's no longer supported with proper security updates, I only use it offline and air-gapped now.

That said, I like Zorin OS a lot, but Linux still lacks what I need as my daily driver.

As for spying concerns with Microsoft, I think much of that is hype. Yes they collect data, but so do most browsers, social networks, stores, ad networks, security software, file hosts, and ISPs. Even many so-called "trusted" VPNs collect a lot of data.

I actually read all of the EULAs from such companies, and study their claims. For example, Cox (an ISP) used to have an OK privacy policy, but then they lost that huge lawsuit that demanded data records of their users and such. So now they have the worst privacy policies and such I have ever seen, involving the collection and selling of user data. But the main take away here is, long before that lawsuit, Cox was indeed collecting and storing their users' traffic data, going back several years, which is now all for sale.

These companies have numerous legal tricks to support their claims of privacy, as they partner through circuitous channels to profit from user data.

Also, with device fingerprinting and such, the privacy battle has been lost IMO. In other words, if you think your activities are private, then think again and study up, that is if you can clearly peer down that rabbit hole.

That all said, I'm much more concerned with security than privacy. I think my most effective policy to keep private is to not buy anything online, as that's what these spying companies are most interested in tracking.

Beyond all that, my biggest concern is with DRM. In short, it's possible that one day, most all hardware will have DRM (and worse) baked into it, which would potentially put an end to all digital piracy and more.

No problem. It's often fun pretending we can actually help each other, when in fact such info can be found with some basic searching, ha.

BTW, what makes you so chipper? Are you on some new drug I should know about?

Ha... Take care.

Thanks for that heads up about karac22, although that seems like some rather obvious comments to ignore.

Also, as a rule of thumb, I never access any links in these comments.

Beyond that, not to name names, but I find the less obvious BS comments are the ones as these:

"Can anyone tell me how to had subtitles to a show"
"I am old but new to all this movie stuff"

As if.. ha. But I get it, as some folks like to engage in superfluous chit chat. Personally, I'm more of a fan of belaboring rhetoric, but it's all good to me, ha.

Yeah,I know there is snooping everywhere. I got turned off to Windows 10 by the nagware & even malware tactics to force it on us. Then there was the installation where if you weren't careful they would hijack your defaults & make it hard to put them back. If you didn't go into the 13 "privacy" screens & turn a lot of stuff off you would even be hot miked. In their EULA they have the right to search your software & private folders & even rat you out to law enforcement.

They were supposed to support 8.1 until 2023, but they forced Intel to not support anything but Windows 10 with the 7th generation "Kaby Lake" that came out in Jan 2017. When they found out some motherboards with it still worked fine with 7 & 8, they put out an "update" that bricked all future security updates. I stocked up on My AsRock board. I even have a spare genuine 8.1 machine with a new board in case they pull some crap & not let my other one transfer the key if I ever need to replace the motherboard. It's Microsoft's strong arm tactics that turned me off to 10.

My son is a genius programmer. I got him his 1st PC for his 4th birthday in 1989. He was writing his own video games at 7. He set me up with a 3 desktop "user friendly" Ubuntu that I just updated to 18.04.

As for DRM I don't worry about hardware because I use VLC for everything. Back when I had a big dish I was recording with DVD's. When I bought a new one it would not record some channels. Software DRM has always been broken.

The end is coming, because they have been raiding the top scenes. Some release groups recently disappeared, but so far others have taken up the slack. Site blocking will eventually come to the US. I know you can use a VPN, but what happens when you run out of countries that are not blocking? More lockers will be taken down once the US finally gets Kim Dotcom. Uploaded has pretty much done a Rapidshare. This one was the last site I knew that used it. Not going to renew my Rapidgator until it expires. I have Extmatrix that I only know 2 sites that use it, but one of them is really good. Even links from years ago are still live.

They will eventually win the Wack-a-mole game that has been going on for so long.

"Microsoft's strong arm tactics that turned me off to 10." .. Ha, I get that.

Also note, according to Microsoft's Privacy Statement, they simply don't search your system for whatever they want, whenever they want, such as scanning your files for copyrighted media and then ratting you out.

If anything, it's more complicated than that, yet I reckon perhaps not too far from the truth..

For example, if you use Windows Security, and allow it to scan all your files, and it finds malware or the like, then Windows can report that info back to them. Likewise, say if you use VLC, and some video file corrupts the player and crashes Windows, then that info can be sent back to Microsoft as well.. In addition to that, say you have a Microsoft account tied to Windows, and you used your real name with that account, confirmed with purchases at their store or whatever, then you have pretty much no privacy.

Now, a user can jump through hoops to prevent MS and such from spying on them, which can help some, but alas, that potentially puts such users on the top of other profile lists, such as what data brokers collect and trade.

Yet again, most of this tracking is for marketing and brainwashing, as with leveraging sociological methodologies from VALS Framework, Claritas Prizm, and the like. Yet although such has been a threat to our so-called freedoms, I think most folks don't give a hoot, nor do I.., much.., anymore.

As for the wack-a-mole game, perhaps they will kill it eventually, and I reckon likely so, but IDK. I imagine doing so would pretty much involve blocking whole countries, as we don't all share the same copyright laws. What I do know, the hardware DRM front is the holy grail for them, but we will see how far they can get with that.

VLC can rarely crash you. I have accidentally put an info file in the playlist. It will hang up, but you can usually kill it. Only a few times ever did it get stuck & I have to shut down. It's much better at this than it was years ago.

As far as marketing to you from your purchases, an ad blocker can prevent most of this. I use uBlock. They do end up in your cookies. I have bought something from NewEgg & he next time I go on Amazon related items are "suggested for you". On a few occasions I have even bought.

I use Firefox & I want to keep my history. I have Chrome because a number of sites won't let you watch videos if you block ads. Also by constantly clearing my history I can get by several paywalls that limit articles per month. The difference without ad block is VERY noticeable & annoying.

Microsoft does state they can report you for pirating their software. Don't know how much they care about other companies programs & I doubt they will do it for videos. I suppose they do have my email & possibly my purchase history. I bought two keys from them to make 8 genuine upgrading from 7 that wasn't.

As I said, I have several spare 7th generation boards. Kaby Lake was not supposed to work with 7 & 8, so I doubt 8th generation will at all. Should I EVER get 10 it would be strictly if I want software that only run on it & that is ALL I would use it for. No browsing beyond software purchases & updates. No other purchases. NO personal files. I do sometimes have to briefly put my 7 & 8 online for software updates, but I quickly disable it again.

@OldGeezer916

That was just an example I used with VLC. A corrupt video file can crash any player at some level. But as you brought it up, I've found that MPC-BE x64 deals with such crashes the best, which is a rather easy thing to test and compare, which I have.

As for getting busted for using pirated MS software, the only legal actions I know of involved businesses who used pirated copies who were ratted out by employees, and/or individuals who were selling or uploading/posting pirated copies. I think it's pure hype to promote the idea that regular users need to worry about MS scanning their computers for pirated software, so MS can bust them in court, or rat then out. If you think I'm wrong, then show me some proof, as I'm open to learn otherwise to this topic. Otherwise concede and move on, ha.

Now I agree that MS could do such a thing, but as I explained, it's not a thing, yet. Also worth noting, back in the day MS was locking systems (with all files) that ran a pirated version of Win 7. As I remember, they only did that for a few months (at most), before users complained and MS ended that unpopular policy. Also, as I recall, that locking involved the user trying to update the OS, not via some spying scan, but perhaps so. Regardless, after that event, MS has been rather relaxed when it comes to non-business users running pirated version of Windows 7. Windows 10 is basically free, so IDK about what has been going on with pirated versions of that.

As for marketing data gathering via your purchases, an ad blocker can NOT prevent most of what I explained. When you buy stuff, that gets added to your profile, and such info is often consolidated and traded among data brokers. Ad blockers can prevent ad networks and such from tracking you from site to site, but with fingerprinting and other tricks, users are still effectively identified and tracked regardless. Yet if you just want to block annoying ads, then ad blockers are great. Yet I think the best way to thwart ads is with a "Pi Hole".

I use Edge, Firefox, and Opera, each for specific uses. Edge for example is the most secure, and only Opera offers some extensions that work best IMO for ripping media streams from most any site. I don't use Chrome anymore, as I like Edge much better, and the latest tests show that Edge is more secure than Chrome on Windows.

Other than that, if you want to be the most secure with your purchases and banking, then I suggest you use a dedicated PC for that, and only that, and keep it off your local network, with no Wi-Fi. Yet although Windows 10 with Edge is a secure choice, a Chromebox is likely a better and affordable choice, especially if you use an Android device you want to synch and share data with, and/or use Google Pay and such.

That all said, the main reason I use Windows 10 is for playing pirated games offline. Yet of those games I like, I eventually purchased them for Xbox One. As such, I have little need to use Windows anymore. As such, I will likely keep using my XP and 7 boxes offline as need be, with 10 soon to be unplugged as well. Right now, Zorin OS, Chrome OS, and Android are working good for most all my needs online.

In the end, I just treat them as tools, without getting too emotional about the politics and hype, as with "MS is evil", ha. That's like saying a chainsaw is evil. Better to say "MS is potentially dangerous", and deal with it, without the hype.

I had read that Microsoft wanted to keep even pirated Windows updated so it would limit the spread of malware. Never heard of any lockup in 7. Must have been before I ever got it. A couple times a year an update would break a popular 7 hack & the desktop would be black & show the watermark, but all you had to do was uninstall & reinstall the hack to get it back. I figure you know the one I'm talking about but you may have filters if I name it. I didn't find a break for 8, but then I stopped looking when I bought keys & went legit. The 7 in my Virtualbox is genuine.

I don't upload & what little torrents I did, I used a VPN. Never heard of anyone getting busted for only downloading from a locker. Torrents are uploading at the same time.

It doesn't bother me that my purchases can be targeted. I'm not buying anything illegal. With uBlock I see very few annoying ads & that I do care about.

As for VLC, any hangups can usually just mean you close the window if the stop button doesn't work. If not, just send a kill signal from the system monitor. In more than 3 years I have been using Ubuntu I only remember shutting down once. I don't use it much in Windows. For the Nvidia hardware acceleration to work in Xilisoft, I have to stay with an older driver. VLC 2.2.8 works fine, but version 3 seems to have problems. Just as well. I really only use it in Windows to scroll through files to test them & the mouse wheel in 3 scrolls them much slower. Version 3.0.8 came with my Ubuntu upgrade. A couple changes I like. Been using VLC for so many years & so rarely had much problems since versions very long ago. Pretty satisfied with it. I could try the one you suggested if it works with Ubuntu.
