@Oscar2 - OK, VLC is the problem, just played DV files online and with the smplayer and there is nothing wrong with my monitor. Colours are normal - so VLC player can't play DV files?

@Bella

from reading up here

https://www.reddit.com/r/VLC/comments/qtvnbp/wrong_colours_in_dolby_vision_can_anyone_help_me/

it looks like a win 11 problem with vlc

Also try playing the DV file with the "Films & TV" app

Please don't forget Shadow and Bone S02E05, which is the only Episode missing. Completely missing.

@Bella, @Oscar2
I mentioned monitors because they are the least often upgraded. However, there are two other pieces needed to play HDR content, besides a monitor with HDR capability. First, a graphics card capable of HDR, and second, a Display Port 1.4 cable or an HDMI 2.0a (or greater) cable.

My point is, it's most likely a hardware issue, not a software issue. Maybe save yourself jumping down the software rabbit hole by checking your hardware first.

I see I missed a lot of posts in the last day. (I must not have refreshed the page.) Anyway...
Cheers to @Oscar2 for solving Bella's problem :)
Cheers to @Bella for now being able to play HDR content :)

@meridian - Many thanks for the extra information, but it turned out VLC has issues with DV on Windows 11. All good now! :)

@ladyleia

Welcome to the site. Yes, downloading is possible here.
Firstly, a few questions so as to know where you're at.

Do you know what a hoster is?
Do you know what x264 and x265 are
Do you know what 1080p, 720p, 480p are?
What OS are you running, and which version?

The best and most powerful media player on earth is K-Lite Codec Pack (Full or Mega)(CodecGuide.com/download_kl.htm). The other great one is mpv (mpv.io) (which is based on MPlayer and mplayer2). KLCP (Full or Mega) and mpv can play ANY media file out of the box without the need to configure or download any extra codec. KLCP is Windows-only while mpv is cross platform. Having both of them on a system is a wise thing to do.

PotPlayer (PotPlayer.Daum.net) and SMPlayer (smplayer.info/en/downloads) are good too.

VLC Media Player was once the Swiss army knife of video players but it's not recommended anymore due to its inability to play some codecs and inferiority as compared with KLCP and mpv.

The only issue with mpv is the fact that its configuration isn't as simple and straightforward as KLCP. However it can be done with little effort.
In my opinion only two things initially need to be configured in mpv: subtitle size and subtitle margin from bottom. (As mentioned it's a subjective matter.) It can be done by opening a new file in Notepad++ (or any other text editor) and adding the two lines below and saving the file with the name "mpv.conf" and placing it in the "mpv" folder:
--sub-font-size=40
--sub-margin-y=45

I recommend watching Gannibal (RMZ.cr/gannibal) and The Makanai (RMZ.cr/the-makanai-cooking-for-the-maiko-house) and of course the best series I've seen in all my life, Alice in Borderland (RMZ.cr/alice-in-borderland) ;)
